How an unhealthy population can take control and own their health
Australia’s population is living longer, but how
healthy are men and women throughout the Nation? Unfortunately, the reality is
that we are living in an environment of rising chronic illness, with half the
population living with at least one chronic condition.
A recent article from the Australian Government
announced the cost of aged care alone in 2017-2018 reached a staggering $18
billion (1). In another report, just over 1 in every 5 older Australians recorded
having preventable health diseases such as heart or vascular disease, stroke,
or other chronic illnesses such as diabetes (2). Medical risk factors such as high
blood pressure, diabetes, and lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption,
smoking status, and activity levels all contribute substantially in preventing
risk of having stroke or developing other health issues.
There is a myriad of health metrics that assist in
identifying an individual’s risk of developing illness which can be easily
measured via a free 4-minute Health Check on a SiSU Health Station. Through
community health initiatives such as the SiSU Health Station, individuals can
easily measure, track and improve their health to prevent illnesses from ever
developing.
Furthermore, the country faces an increased need
for health care professionals throughout a multitude of sectors such as aged
care, primary health, and technology to promote accessibility and keep up with
demand. SiSU Health plays an integral part in alleviating the pressure many health
professionals face by providing evidence-based, medically trusted biometric
data in an easy-to-access SiSU Health Check. Through a SiSU Health Check,
members can easily identify whether they fall into an ‘at risk’ category and
are automatically recommended to visit a GP. SiSU Health has recommended over 277,357
Australians to visit their GP for High Blood Pressure and over 147,002
Australians for High BMI, helping to prevent conditions such as diabetes,
stroke and heart disease from eventuating.
The importance of an upstream approach to promote a
healthier community is paramount in order to alleviate the burden on our health
care system, but also in assisting individuals to stay informed, feel empowered,
and live happier and healthier lives.
