Deputy Director Pharmacy Operations Canberra Health Services

Monica Rayson works as Deputy Director of Pharmacy at Canberra Health Services. In this role, Monica combines her expertise in digital health and pharmacy operations to focus on the strategic development of the pharmacy service and pharmacy workforce. Monica has co-authored national Standards of Practice for Pharmacy Informatics and Pharmacy Forecast of Australia publications where she collaborates with other industry leaders to share her insights on future of pharmacy. Monica has led many Australian first projects including the creation of a legally compliant framework for credentialling and utilising Pharmacy Accuracy Checking Technicians and the introduction of a virtual pharmacist workforce to address a significant skills shortage This project also enabled Canberra Health Services to provide 24/7 access to specialist pharmacists. Most recently, Monica has led the implementation of a Closed Loop Medication Management workflow to improve medication safety and patient care through the acute care services of Canberra Hospital.

4:00 PM Case Study | Implementing Closed Loop Medication Management at Canberra Health Services to Improve Patient Safety, Timely Supply of Medicines and Release Nurse Time

Combining automation technology with GS1 data matrix, Canberra Health Services have implemented a Closed Loop Medication Management (CLMM) system that enables barcode medication administration (BCMA) verification of each dose of medication at the patient bedside; significantly reducing the rates of administration errors. The CLMM model is also showing a reduction in the number of missed and delayed medication doses and release of nursing time, allowing them to devote more time to providing direct patient care.
